Watford;s projected new stadium would be built in neighbouring Hertsmere and, according to Private Eye, local Conservative councillors can't decide whether to support it.
Supporters of the projects said that the development at Bushey on the site of a golf course would bring 1,800 full and part-time jobs and £250m of investment. Many of the jobs would come from a hotel and cinema that form part of the plans.
Conservative councillors in Bushey realised that many of their voters would not be happy about a regular influx of football fans. 'Bushey Conservatives' started a petition against the plan which has attracted more than 5,000 signatures.
This threatened a party split, so the ingenious solution has been to blame Liberal Democrat controlled Watford for allowing too much development so there is no room for the football club to expand in its home borough.
Private Eye concludes: 'Cynics believe the campaigners may keep their seats safe at the next election, while knowing that whatever is decided about the stadium will not depend on what local people think.'
Should Watford be relegated, this could affect the viability of the proposal.
