The authoritative Swiss Ramble has made a financial comparison of this evening's Champions League finalists (based on 2016/17 figures). Real Madrid have far higher revenue and wages, but Liverpool are more profitable.
Real Madrid has far more revenue at £580m against Liverpool's £364m. Revenue is higher in all the main streams: broadcasting, commercial and match day.
The wage bill at Real Madrid is £324m compared to £208m at Liverpool. However, Liverpool's profits before tax at £40m are bigger than those of Real Madrid at £23m.
The Swiss Ramble comments, 'A reminder that Liverpool only had the 5th highest revenue and 6th highest wage bill of the eight Champions League quarter-finalists, so it's a great achievement to reach the final.'
Deloitte's Sports Business Group estimates that the difference between winning and losing the Champions League final for Liverpool is about £4m in 'distributions', a complex formula through which Uefa hands out prize money and media rights cash to competing teams.
The Swiss Ramble notes, 'The finalists have already earned large sums: Liverpool would get €82.7m if they win (€78.2m if they lose); Real Madrid would get €87.2m if they win (€82.7m if they lose).'
