The proposed sale of Newcastle United is in jeopardy after Mike Ashley sanctioned an inflammatory statement that accused Amanda Staveley, the businesswoman who has been attempting to buy the club, of wasting his time. A senior source at St. James' Park, has indicated that comments attributed to a 'source close to Ashley' and quoted by Sky Sports News, which appeared to question the seriousness of Staveley and PCP Capital, her company, were reflective of the owner's views.
'It is only right to let the fans know that there is no deal on the table or even under discussion with Amanda Staveley and PCP,' the source said. 'Attempts to reach a deal have proved to be exhausting, frustrating and a complete waste of time.'
That version of events was disputed by sources close to Staveley who said that a written offer for Newcastle was sent in November and had not been withdrawn. According to Staveley's camp, that £250m bid, a straight cash deal, was the second that PCP had put to Ashley. The first was up to £350m with conditions and based on instalments, something that Ashley had encouraged when Newcastle was put up for sale in October. Ashley now apparently wants £350m with no conditions.
Ashley appears to be asking for too much, particularly with no bidding rivals in view. He wants out, the fans want him out, but no happy ending is in sight.
