Lower league owners step up to the plate

Gloomy speculation about the fate of League One and League Two clubs may overlook the willingness of benefactor owners to provide the funds necessary for them to survive.  A case in point is Simon Hallett at Plymouth Argyle: https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/sport/football/simon-hallett-protects-plymouth-argyles-4188495

Many football fans who are not Pilgrims fans admire the dedication of the Green Army in following their team all over the country.  I would also like to express my thanks for the work they have put in to help youngsters interested in football in the remote Isles of Scilly with its two team league, now effectively cut off from the mainland.

The United States-based businessman has already been generous to Argyle, particularly in terms of developing the stadium at Home Park.

Now he has stepped up to the plate in the club's hour of need.  He states: ' My role since becoming Argyle’s owner has been to provide the money to invest in our future. The longer this virus goes on, the more obvious it is that I have to do more to protect that long-term future. The best way to do that, while keeping options open, is to put cash in the bank.'

Reports about Charlton sale exaggerated

Reports have appeared in The Guardian and elsewhere that Charlton has been put up for sale. Richard Cawley is an authoritative local journalist who runs a South London Sport substack site.  He reached out to the club yesterday evening to ask for comment on The Guardian’s article. Early indications from the club have been that nothing has changed since the story about them seeking investment, except that it is now a different company doing it. Charlton have since managed to consolidate their place in the Championship, avoiding an instant return to League One, with their women’s side promoted to the WSL, returning to the top flight for the first time since 2007, although staying there is likely to be costly. It would be counter-intuitive for owners Global Football Partners not to progress the club when looking for investment, that the focus remains on driving it forward, that their spend this summer is in line with long-term planning and will see an increase in wages spent on players...
